I am most certainly making sweeping assumptions and generalizations anon 14.32 - I don't think we can really discuss this topic in the comments of the Gazette without making some!

What I was attempting to express (which I think you understood considering your final paragraph) is that what we tend to describe as Islamic extremism (that is ultra-conservative Islam done up in a tasteful wrapper of nation building with a lovely adherence to collective responsibility which justifies any and all atrocities) is not really all that different from what we tend to describe as "white nationalism" (ultra conservatives who believe in "the nation" often defined by race, ethnicity or religion, who also use collective responsibility to justify any and all atrocities).

I tend to feel that making that connection would incense these people more. ("Hey Mr Renshaw, you're basically just the same as Jihadi John mate")

We ought to just call them all violent extremists. Who gives a toss what they actually believe in.
