Anon @ 13:13, I came from the 'poorer classes' and was Called 20 years ago and have since cross-qualified. I recall the dinners being heavily subsidised for students (hot lunches were about £2 a pop at the café under the hall at Inner Temple. Bargain!). I thought that dinners were actually a valuable experience. I didn't know anyone at the Bar, but there were plenty of leading lights at the Bar and the Bench who were prepared to give up their time to help fledgling barristers with advice on pupillage and life at the Bar.
