I cannot understand why Shaun's description of the legal simplicity of marriage - all the 'traditional' fancy dress and religious ceremonies being the participants' choice - should not be the same for divorce. Either one party serves the other, and the Registrar, with notice of the decision, or the parties agree and notify the Registrar. There will then be a (variable) delay to settle financial matters - which consenting couples may have agreed in advance - if necessary, in Court. There will be legislation for children's interests, in which a party causing what the Court thinks is unreasonable delay will be faced with paying the costs of.
I'm not a lawyer, so bear that in mind if you want to berate me.
