I agree it should be on merit, but wonder if there have been lobbying reasons for raising the bar in some recent competitions puts pressure on government?

And for the record I know of a number of state educated solicitors who have been appointed in various competitions. But I'd also concede that there is still a tilt in favour of the Bar. Many factors, but one is certainly because they have better mentoring and training.
