Why plead guilty to a crime they didn’t commit? It sounds so straightforward as to be almost a banal concept doesn’t it? Except only this week I represented a person of good character who was struggling to juggle the £250 cost of returning to court for trial when he faced at worst a compensation order of £105 and possibly a modest fine of no more than £75 based upon his means.

So, risk of £250 versus certainty of £180 today. For a Polish national of good character on a zero hours contract supporting a wife and daughter.

The premium of trying to establish innocence - not quite so cut and dried this “justice” business, eh Anon?
