Howard Shelley: If you are right, that people tend "to group together with ... those who look like them and come from the same background" (and I fear that you may be), a multi-racial society is going to be very hard to hold together, avoiding its fragmentation into its constituent racial and ethnic groups, particularly if we ever get to the stage where there is no majority racial group (Birmingham is already there, even using such broad-brush racial categories as 'white', 'Asian' and 'Black'). If you are also right that each community "excludes the views of other communities and tends to side-line them" then we could be in for an awful lot of problems.
