The legal profession should step in to save the Lloyd George Museum in Llanystumdwy, north Wales, from the threat of closure.
Many prime ministers have been barristers, but Lloyd George is the only solicitor to have been PM. Moreover, he is the only British prime minister to have been Welsh and in 2002 was named one of the 100 greatest Britons following a UK-wide vote.
The museum is a delightful place, full of irreplaceable details from the life of one of the foremost British statesmen of the 20th century. It seems absurd and a sad indictment on these times of austerity that the local council is considering cutting support to the museum to save £27,000 per year. In his early years as an MP, Lloyd George continued to work as a solicitor in London.
It would not take much for London’s legal community to find this annual sum to preserve invaluable memories of his career.
