With regard to Christopher Fenton’s letter about taking the oath, the situation in Grimsby was far better than the position at the Old Cheshire Cheese.

Many of my generation received no income as an articled clerk, and so we would invariably telephone a local firm to make an appointment to see the late Derry Wilson. The oath would be duly sworn and the fee handed over. As one walked towards the door, Derry would kindly put all the fee in a backward out-stretched hand. When he retired he was sadly missed!
