Like James Morton, I am an admirer of the former solicitor Victor Morley Lawson and I trust he will excuse me for pointing out some factual errors in last week’s article.

Lawson was the oldest rider, aged 67, to win his first race under rules on 16 October 1973 in the Corinthians Amateur maiden race at Warwick (a flat race) on his own horse Ocean King.

Ocean King went on to win the Cesarewitch at Newmarket when professionally ridden.

Popsi’s Joy was also owned and ridden by Victor, but their partnership failed to record a victory.
