A provision to give legal aid to trafficked and enslaved people as soon as they are encountered is unnecessary, the government claimed.

Home Office minister Lord Bates told the Lords that a proposed Labour amendment to the Modern Slavery Bill was not needed as a new pilot of the existing National Referral Mechanism will offer legal support for anyone where there are ‘reasonable grounds’ to presume they have been trafficked.

The amendment was not moved.
