I am a leading buyer of legal services. Lucy Scott-Moncrieff’s declaration in ‘Celebrating difference’ that ‘purchasers of legal services are moving towards selection based on evidence of sustained diversity improvements and initiatives within law firms’ shows that she needs to get out more.

Diversity has long been written into the DNA of today’s purchasers to such an extent that any firm that lacks a rainbow array has come to seem diminished, if not diseased. The Law Society’s new LGBT Lawyers Division needs to start its work in the right place and avoid being depressed by out-of-date attitudes.
