After RTA Portal fixed costs were slashed to £500 in exchange for a promise by insurers that motor premiums would be reduced, I was disappointed but not in the least surprised when I received my motor insurance renewal quote today. It has increased by £80.

I telephoned the insurance company to check that there had not been a mistake, which apparently there had not been. I told the adviser that consumers were led to believe by insurers that premiums would be reduced in exchange for the government’s agreement to slash solicitors’ costs for RTA Portal claims. This comment was brushed aside with, ‘well there are variations between insurers’.

To add insult to injury, the adviser then went on to try and sell me the add-on legal expense option – her exact words were: ‘I always recommend legal services.’

You could not make it up.
