Those of us interested in improving how we train our lawyers may learn something from the world of American football.

Jen Welter, known as Dr Jen, recently started a six-week trial coaching at the Arizona Cardinals training camp. She has made history after being hired as the first female coach in the NFL, American football’s highest tier. ‘The one thing I’ve learnt from players,’ she said, ‘is all they want to know is: How you going to make me better; I don’t care if you’re the Green Hornet, I’ll listen.’

Dr Jen is right. Before we listen to any so-called expert telling us about their latest hare-brained scheme for revolutionising the training of the next generation of lawyers, we should listen to the comic book advice of the Green Hornet – that the purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen up the body and polish up the intellect.

We could all do with a bit of that.
