Eduardo Reyes wonders why lawyers do not publicise their financial giving to charity as they do their pro bono work (‘How to give to charity’, 16 November). But doesn’t boasting about doing good to others diminish its value?  

Surely, the best giving and acts of kindness are done quietly under the ancient wisdom of ‘when you give to someone in need, don’t even let your left hand know what your right hand is doing’.
