Remote court hearings and tribunals have been disrupted today by problems with Google’s web services. His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Services confirmed it was 'aware of an issue affecting Cloud Video Platform (CVP), used for some remote hearings.'
Posting on X, HM Courts & Tribunals, added: ‘We’re working with our technology partners to restore service. If you’re having difficulty joining a hearing, please contact the court or tribunal dealing with your case.’
Google's cloud system has been down across England and Wales since about 10am today, affecting Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Revolut, Rightmove, Sky and Royal Mail as well as the courts.
A statement published on Google’s website earlier today confirmed that ‘multiple’ Cloud services have suffered network failures following a ‘power event’.
Google said: ‘Due to a power event we had suffered an outage within europe-west2-b zone. The power event is mitigated. Partial mitigation to infrastructure services will be observed within the next 30 minutes and the remaining services will be mitigated thereafter.’
The latest update from Google said: ‘We are seeing the recovery of services for most workloads in europe-west2 as of Tuesday, 2026-10-20 05:10 PDT [1.10pm GMT].’
It is due to provide a further update at 3pm, adding: ‘We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption.’
Cloud Video Platform was rolled out to civil and family courts in 2020 having been previously used in 60 Crown courts and 93 magistrates’ courts.
