HM Courts and Tribunals Service has seen the future and it works. Earlier this week it teamed up with the Society for Computers and Law (president Richard Susskind) to host representatives from more than 20 countries on the topic of online courts. HMCTS' chief executive Susan Acland-Hood and 'change director', Richard Goodman were there to enthuse about England and Wales' own steps to moving courts online in an age when 87% of the population have access to a smartphone.

'Excellent two days and a great list of speakers from around the world,' the HMCTS Twitter feed summed up. You know what's coming next: with the inevitability of a garden rake in a Tom and Jerry cartoon, the very next tweet announced: 'We're sorry if you've had issues accessing our services today, courts & tribunals have had problems sending/receiving emails & with our telephones.'

O, brave new world...
