For those who cannot get enough of court, Obiter has found a solution: a nine-bedroom home for sale in Cambridgeshire which includes a former courtroom and prison cells.

In the 1800s, the Old Courthouse in Linton was a magistrates’ court, police station and local prison. According to Cheffins, the estate agency selling the home, the original courtroom features a vaulted ceiling with exposed ceiling timbers, original solid wood flooring a (currently boarded up) fireplace - as well as four courthouse benches.

The original magistrates’ room, now used as a lounge, includes the original ‘magistrates’ private’ plaque on the entry door. One of the ‘cells’ boasts the original bed, and a non-operational corner toilet, as well as an ‘I want out’ etched into the painted brickwork.

The magistrates’ court was closed in the 1970s, according to news reports, prior to conversion. From the photos, there is an abundance of light. A rarity in some courts.

Though living with a former courtroom as your lounge may not be for everyone, and despite spending much of our working life within court buildings, Obiter cannot think of anything better than being part of such a building’s history. Plus, if you are a workaholic, this way you get to relax in a setting you are comfortable with.
