Isn't the point that imprisonment was never designed as punishment, merely for detention pending punishment or trial as the case may be? It was only the gradual abolition of corporal punishment in the last 150 years or so that has left periods of imprisonment as filling that void but with no other purpose. Once prisons can be once more designated as the 'places of correction', then a proper debate can start as to what that means and how that can be achieved.
