I really dislike The Law Society report on 21st Century Justice. Led by a criminal lawyer with an advisory board containing non-lawyers with self-interests it doesn’t represent my views and I really struggle to believe it represents the views of the majority of 27000 litigators in this country. This part of the article particularly disappoints me - “Many of these ideas chime with those in the Law Society’s 21st Century Justice report, published last month. This includes a recommendation for the government to build an online ‘solutions explorer’ as a triage entry route into the civil justice system. ‘There are more similarities than differences,’ Society deputy vice president Brett Dixon told the meeting.”

Why do they “chime”? Why are we going along with ideas from many people who have never worked near the coalface!

I feel this is all manufactured to fit because if TLS was to properly consult us and was to ask 27000 litigators if unbundling, LEI, Legal Aid and an AI triage system are better ideas for civil justice compared with compelling 100+ litigators a day to provide 216000 free hours of advice per year (1 day of compulsory pro-bono work per year per litigator) worth £50m+ to help access to justice I know which one the litigators would pick. The Law Society pays zero regard to that option and is putting forward proposals that reduce opportunities for litigators. That kind of omission highlights how worthless the report is. TLSs job is to represent our interests and this report does nothing of the sort. Where are the people who are there to protect our interests? Where’s the critical thinking?
