Most brickies, plasterers, sparkies and plumbers would not get out of bed if offered what your average High Street employed solicitor earns.

Just look through adverts in the legal press. Tine and again you will see local authorities, whose managers are on 6 figure salaries, casting around for lawyers to work for a third of the salaries the managers get.

Many high street solicitors could only dream of a £50k salary - this is not the public sector, or quangoland, where bumper salaries are commonly paid.

It is also why, I suspect, there is great distaste within the profession that the Chief Executive of the SRA is paid more than the President of the UK Supreme Court. It is completely ludicrous.

And still £64m goes walkies and they have the audacity to claim it is now history.
