This looks like another press release PR stunt rather than any ground-breaking initiative.
They are not “abandoning” they are offering an option – that’s now new.
Fixed Fees are not necessarily good for consumers. They have no idea whether they are fair, and presumably will have no right to challenge them.
Any “fix” will almost certainly be hedged about with limitations & exceptions which will apply after the consumer has committed themselves.
I predict the next costs story will be dissatisfied consumers complaining that they signed up to a fixed fee for a job, only to find that was part of the whole job, and they then paid a series of “fixed fees” which ended up as multiple of the original figure. I’ve heard rumours that one new ABS is already getting adverse customer reaction in probate work for doing exactly that.
