The LSB report is worth reading.

It is not a surprise that the Law Soceity clique would "hit back" at the report.

If you are going to have a brave new world of commercial entities providing legal services (not that I necessarily agree) then what the LSB says is perfectly correct.

Why, in such a case, do you need to do much more than ensure that client money is safe, that there is a Legal Ombudsman or other means of redress for complaints, and that any specific risks are dealt with?

Why can a person who wants to be a will writer set up tomorrow, but a person who wants to be a solicitor will writer have to wait at least seven years (three degree, one lpc, two training contract, and another during which the professional skills course is to be done) and more likely 9 years?

And if we have a solicitor will writer, why are they required to maintain compliance with a whole host of technical rules, when their competitor next door is not?

It should be one way or the other, and that is what the LSB are saying.

The Law Society clique are of course upset because their power and influence (and the financial rewards which flow back to the upper echelons of Law Society Council) would be lost. They would become solely a representative body and the SRA merged with the other regulators and be entirely independent.
