So let me get this straight: women solicitors are whining because they aren't handed partnership on a plate in the middle to latter stages of their careers?
Really?
The Dickensian paradigm of an automatic conveyor belt from articled clerk through solicitor to partner to retirement ceased to hold sway decades ago.
Now, solicitors are refusing to retire (as the paradigm they agreed to expected them to) and are instead using anti-discriminatory practices to justify reneging on the arrangement they agreed to abide by, thereby hoarding their equity stakes with no intention whatever of surrendering them save at prices that no firm would be able to pay without closure being the outcome.
The result?
Gifted solicitors leave and set up their own firms with their own money.
In these circumstances these brave mavericks (both males and females) are very unlikely to be keen on throwing about profit shares when they themselves have only just emerged from a risk all period of uncertainty.
Women solicitors for their part have undermined their own positions by their preparedness to undercut male solicitors on salary.
See how being a clever dick can land you in it?
Now we have a bizarre situation of apparent equality in terms of gender numbers but manifest inequality in terms of assigned position.
So what has equality done for women?
It has done what it has done for every other industry: transformed a situation where one main breadwinner earned well (allowing the other to take on a part time role for a bit of extra wallop) to a scenario where both halves of a couple now have to work flat out to earn what was once earned by the main breadwinner ALONE (AND with the additional reduction in income caused by child care costs).
Well done feminists: with your bang up job of achieving fairness for your members have you thought of amalgamating with the SRA?
