Here we have an entire set of new reforms being piled on top of earlier reforms which have not even had time to bed down properly and still the mania for reform from 'enlightened' politicians and judges grinds on as if it had an unstoppable momentum of its own. The reform process needs to be halted - and urgently - with a complete independent audit of any costs-savings and efficiencies gained during the past 15 years of repetitive chopping and changing with everything being turned inside out and upside down to no apparent purpose. The actions of reformer QCs, judges and politicians are not inviolable. If any reforms introduced during that time are independently established as having been entirely wasteful, damaging and counter-productive (in retrospect, this is obviously the case), those responsible for pushing the reforms need to be held accountable. Shailesh Vara, as justice minister, can you specifically quantify in £stg (a) the precise savings and efficiencies which have been secured by successive governments since 1995 in all of the successive overhauls of the legal system which have been made and (b) precisely what costs savings have been passed on to the general public and businesses from the reforms in accessing the legal system. Are there any ? Or is it merely change for the sake of change and an exercise in churning out mountains of legislation which in turn, has to be reformed at a later time ? Concrete evidence of any benefits at all of the 15 year reform process need to be publicly demonstrated. Evidence is after all our stock in trade. Minister, where is the evidence ?
