Good think piece. However I am not in favour of the proposal to abolish the Court of Appeal. I think the Supreme Court is there to deal with cases that have real impact on the rule of law or the constutition, but the Court of Appeal, particuarly the criminal division gives convicted criminals the opprtunity to have their convictions tested. I am much happier with the proposal to bolster the public defender scheme. As far as I am concerned this is the future - once it is propoerly funded and rolled out acriss the country economies of scale that cannot presently be enjoyed, will accrue. The other long term, and in my view, inevitable, issue that you didn't address was the advent of a merged profession. Again I think for various reasons, including but not limited to financial sustainability, this has to happen as the present system is inefficient, unhelpful to consumers and unneccessarily expensive.
