The point here is surely that if one is found not guilty, then the State should pay the defence costs.
As for time limits in historical sexual abuse allegations, the point is that after such an attrition of time, memories fade, documents are lost, witnesses have died or are untraceable and memories become distorted. There is no way to get to the real truth. The burden of proof shifts to the defendant to prove he did not do it, which is almost impossible. Of course there should be time limits on such claims as there are in other countries. We are shamefully sending old men to prison for offences allegedly committed 20.30.40. 50 even 60 years ago. Just ridiculous.
