Quit right Anon 5.51, this whole thing is about the transfer of risk. When will the client in the end not have to go back to deciding for himself who to trust! When I began in practice clients would ask around who their friends recommended to instruct. When I finished they just 'phoned around for the lowest conveyancing quote adding words to the effect that they knew we were all insured so they would take the lowest quote, knowing that they could sue if anything went wrong.

And then there was the Skipton (isn't that somewhere in Yorkshire?) who paid unemployed solicitors, on a commission only basis, to read through loss making files in order to try to find out if the solicitor acting, often for nothing, had breached any general or special condition, or the general law.

I had never previously thought of Yorkshiremen being so risk averse, well not until G Boycott when needing 4 to win a match and a day to get them said to his partner " Aye, we'll take 'em in ones".
