In response to the earlier comment - Mediation does work and it does not simply perpetuate the power imbalances of the relationship. Some down trodden spouses have told me how empowering they found mediation. I have been a solicitor for over thirty years and a mediator for over fifteen. I have mediated thousands of cases. Mediation works if people hear about it, choose it, work at it and have a good mediator. I'm sick to death of hearing mediation doesn't work. It works as well and better than the legal process and at least it doesn't swallow up too big a % of the family pot in costs, nor does it take a year or more. That's better than it might be. Why can't lawyers see they should work in parallel with mediators and that we would all benefit from working together? If we don't then another breed of "divorce helpers" or some such will make inroads into the work while the whinging continues. They're out there already targeting the market. Wake up and smell the coffee.
