I am not disgruntled (although I am always open to being corrected if I am misinformed). I am a qualified solicitor and I was one of the lucky few of my LPC class to get a training contract. Speaking just of solicitors, as long as law firms have the power to decide how many new trainee places they create, and therefore how many people qualify as solicitors each year, it is in their interests to limit that number.
Conversely, if every talented LPC student who was able to pass a difficult exam could become qualified, the numbers would be limited only by talent, not by the profession trying to defend itself by being 'exclusive'.
Yes, I appreciate that it is possible to cross-qualify from other jurisdictuions, but that is not particularly relevant to the thousands of bright law students in the UK who have nothing but debt to show for their efforts.
