It's a complete disgrace. We are one of the richest countries in the world - of course we can afford a system of justice that is accessible to all regardless of individual wealth. We choose instead to allow the super rich, big corporate and the errant self employed to pay almost nothing in tax while hammering the employed and professional partnerships with high rates of income tax, NI and vat. About 80% of the total tax revenue comes from PAYE, NI and VAT leaving those that control the true wealth of this nation paying the other 20%. If they could be persuaded to pay a proper rate of tax we could afford a system of justice that is accessible to all - and so much more. We managed to put in place a national health service, a welfare service and a legally aided system of justice immediately after the second world war when the country was virtually bankrupt. It took two world wars, an intervening depression, followed by great vision, generosity of spirit and immense political will to deliver this and just two generations later we have presided over the complete dismantling of everthing our parents and grandparents fought for. As lawyers we should be ashamed of our inertia - we have sat back and let it happen choosing instead to deliver smug "told you so" comments or homily's about living beyond our means etc like some hideous parody of a Daily Mail leader writer.
