But that has always been the problem with the term "lawyer"-there is no true, ubiquitous definition.

Solicitors are defined by their dispensation to carry out "reserved work". All law outside these narrow fields can be done by anyone at all-and there is an awful lot of "law" outside those fields.

Anyone who operates in those areas must therefore be a lawyer... and can be so without training, PII, paying ransom to the Law Society, or having to put up with nonsense from the SRA. Lucky them!

Why would anyone in their right mind choose to be a solicitor?
