Greetings from a direct access barrister with the litigation qualification-
1. We do not handle client money-it goes into the escrow account at BARCO, hence the low PII premium
2. We can reject any case coming to us as direct access, and can only accept those where the client is capable of acting without a solicitor. There is no 'cab rank' for direct access.
3. There are many cases that we refer to solicitors where we are not resourced enough for the necessary client care.
4. The analogy with solicitor HCAs is a good one. We are not going to be running PI farms or debt collections. We may decide that we can deal with the out of court aspects of the case, but that is only to be decided on a case-by-case/client-by-client basis.
To quote Dr Sheldon Cooper "it's called the comfort zone for a reason".
