It is not fraudulent- none of these companies has been accused of impersonating a solicitor. They merely adopt letterheads and letter formats that appear (at first glance) to be coming from a third party- an impression which does not last once you read the small print on these letters.

I would not criticise sole practitioner solicitors who use a trading name to give the impression of being a larger law firm instead of a one person operation, yet they are also using a trading name to give a misleading impression. These companies such as Wonga and Lloyhds (like a great many others) use trading names and different brands to project different attributes.

This storm in a teacup is really just about solicitors complaining on a perceived encroachment on their 'territory'. Stop being so scared and do what you do well- do you really want to spend your life sending out standard format debt recovery letters?
