I joined the profession in 1950 as an office boy and worked my way up to Managing Clerk, then Legal Exec when the Institute was formed and studied at the library reading law books, reports, Halsbury etc.etc taking exams in my holidays. I was granted articles, eventually (by continuing to read law at the library every evening) qualified as a solicitor. I set up on my own the day I was admitted.
It cost me £484. 75 including law books, exam fees and equipment for the office.
It is experience what matters and what the client pays for and how that experience is obtained matters not.
I understand I was a good solicitor at least my clients thought so.
