By your own admission, there are a lot of awful solicitors out there already. Does that not show that the current model does not work? There is an artificial barrier, which is stopping decent graduates from qualifying, but isn't doing enough to weed out the bad solicitors?

Surely the answer is that it should be harder to qualify, but easier to get to the stage where you can potentially qualify? How about the requirement for two years of on-the-job training, followed by a mercilessly difficult set of exams? Would that not separate the wheat from the chaff, but also make it easier for decent candidates to qualify?
