In my experience as a solicitor-advocate, I have never been treated differently to a barrister due to my status. I have however seen barristers, solicitors, and solicitor-advocates crucified by judges for performing badly or behaving appallingly, regardless of their status. I was not present at this trial and therefore cannot comment on Dr Blacker's performance, but people who wear ribbons and medals on their robes or insist on being addressed as "Lord" bring themselves and their profession into disrepute. Your skills alone should suffice to earn respect. That said, I suspect Dr Blacker was driving the judge round the bend somehow during the trial to earn such a public rebuke, and I do question why the Judge could not have dealt with the matter more privately.
