Replying to Anonymous (17th September, 12:51) I think the last Gazette piece on judicial diversity had these statisitics and they did not make for good reading. Only about 5% of Recorders are solicitors (I think there is no such thing as Assistant Recorder any more). When senior solicitors talk about yearning for a judicial appointment what they generally mean is a High Court appointment. Few realise that there have only ever been four solicitor High Court Judges, and of those only one (Lawrence Collins) was appointed directly from practice. The rest had to work their way up from much lower down.
