David Crawford has raised a serious issue, which leads me to think the CPR ought to include a process whereby a paying party could ask the court to go through the receiving party's bill and reduce or disallow any costs that were felt to be unreasonable or disproportionate. The paying party would have the opportunity to file a list of objections called, say, Points of Dispute, and obviously it would only be fair for the receiving party to be able to file Replies before the bill was considered by the court. You could call the process, oh I don't know ... how about "detailed assessment"? Just a thought!
