The position pre 1948 is that poor people weren't represented. The post 1948 consensus grew that we needed legal aid. So legal aid grew and some of our bretheren stole, and some of them encouraged criminals not to plead guilty where they should have done because the taxpayer paid the cost of the trials. So now we have next to no legal aid. WE AS A COUNTRY DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY. Who would you cut help for? Old people and sick people or people who rob and steal and beat others? Of course it's social lunacy to cut out legal aid for reason that we are all familiar with, but as the late Rik Mayall once remarked, we've had our fun and now we'll have to pay. I have seen three Labour Governments in my lifetime and none of them had a clue how to run an orgy in a brothel. These Tories aren't evil, they are just doing their admittedly poor best with a hopeless situation.
If people want representation then they are going to have to pay. Leave the legal aid system and charge.
