I seem to recall that it was Labour who destroyed the Legal Aid system under Brown & Blair. The only person who I think genuinely spoke up and said this was wrong was Ben Elton. I am afraid that the profession is too divided to stand up for this in any effective way. Labour have admitted that they could not reverse the cuts. FACT - people are not bothered about 'fat cat' lawyers, or the legal system in which they work. That is until they fall victim to it. Frankly, speaking up for the criminal underclass is not a vote winner, and ensuring fair representation and pay for that work, is not a moral or politicial imperative any more.
