It seems astonishing that litigants are held to very specific (and often tight) deadlines to progress a case, with strict sanctions for non-compliance, but that the courts are generally not. A substantial amount of time is wasted while waiting for directions or responses to the court.

I do't begrudge the judiciary for this, because I suspect they are swamped, but the courts do need to be better funded and better staffed. Could we dare to dream that those increased court fees might go toward that?
