The obituary of Francis Thomas Bircham, a former president of the LS (c.1880), recorded that he had been told of a solicitor who had continued proceedings after he had advised the client that "he had not 'a leg to stand on'." Mr Bircham is recorded as replying that "This is a man to make my profession to stink (sic) in the nostrils of the public." Would that such standards still applied!
