Anon 05.08 on the first page (this has gone on for a few days now) I sincerely apologise for using the expression "old farts". I am sorry if it offended anyone. I just couldnt think of the polite term at the time. I must say, however, having children is most definitely NOT a "Hobby". I am actually quite shocked (but not in the least bit surprised) at some of the attitudes on this blog. I fully understand how difficult it must be for employers, especially small firms, to sustain the absence of a key person and have to pay them. However surely the government is to blame for this because as far as I can recall I was only allowed three months after the birth of each of my children. If I took any more it was voluntary and unpaid (and to be honest I think my job would have been unlikely to be kept open). how have things come to women being allowed over 12 months off? I have to say that it seems to me either a woman wants to have kids and be a housewife, or she wants to have kids and work part time (in which case why do you need a year to decide??) or she wants to have kids and a career as well in which case definitely dont take a year off, your career will be long gone by the time you come back. However, there is another big issue here - the cost of childcare. When I had my kids (mid to late 1990s) most of my salary (i went back full time after 3 months for the first two) went on the nursery fees. This may be a big factor in how long women take as maternity leave
