I used to do quite a bit of pro bono, because I was paid fairly well for the area of law I work in. It's now not so well paid, so I do less pro bono. It's not really a complicated cause and effect, is it? I imagine a lot of sole practitioners and small firms are in the same boat.

I like the "exception for low paid solicitors". I really really really really trust the government to put a fair number on that amount of pay. £25k maybe? Hur hur. Bet they'd go by the gross fees rather than the net ones too.

Sometimes I feel like I'm dealing with people who have the honesty and subtlety of used car salesmen.
