It is so blindingly obvious that demonising the legal profession is a deliberate ploy by the Government. First and foremost they want the profession undermined so that no-one worth their salt will want to join it and then challenge Government policy. Secondly, they don't want to spend money on legal aid, so they say let's get lawyers so hated (even more hated, I should say) and then demand that to rescue their reputation they do work that the Government would otherwise have to find money to pay for, for free! I've never done legal aid work but I feel full sympathy for my colleagues who do. However I am currently earning around £35k a year - not exactly a King's ransom - as an in-house lawyer having been a partner in private practice for 20 years odd (where I didn't earn a King's ransom either I might add). Clients have a tendency to think that the solicitor pockets the hourly rate that is being charged and has no idea that the vast majority of that sum is needed for overheads (eg Rent!, PI insurance, IT, Legal library (online), support staff, training, equipment, stationery...)..

Talking about hated sectors - what about bankers....no-one suggests that they should work for nothing I note despite the fact that many of them are on hundreds of thousands a year (and that's without a bonus).
