The only thing you can say he did wrong was taking a BA flight in the first place when he is trying a big case with them as defendant.
If he then has personal experience of waht appears to be one of the allegations which founds the case (and BA denies happens) - i.e. the intentional leaving behind of passengers' luggage - he will have to recuse himself unless BA is able to offer a reasonable alternative explanation for what went on and is likely to bollock BA on exit if they refuse to and allege bias.
This isn't a judge trying to get answers for his private good - this is a judge coming across information in his private capacity apparently directly pertinent to the case he is trying.
