One assumes that in paperless offices, there are adequate back-up systems in place, such as external hard drives containing files and other confidential information.
However, I recently read the comments of an IT expert who warned that a return to paper files might become essential again because of the risk that technological development (which is alarmingly swift these days) might make it impossible to access purely digital information in the future. As an example, who can play back 8 track cartridges, videos, tape cassettes or floppy discs these days? Even CDs are on the way out.
As for not having one's own office or even desk, quite apart from the often noisy environment of an open plan office, how could you possibly be expected to see a client privately in an open plan office. Legal work is still supposed to be confidential after all.
