I would be inclined to think that if more cases are now getting to court it is at least in part due to people feeling they are financially secure enough to take that step. I certianly have clients who separated a year or more ago who are only now dealing with the finances and divorce as they didn't feel they could afford to do so before.

Also, mediation works for some people, but it works better if clients have access to proper advice and support while they go through the process. The end of legal aid means there are many more cases where one or both parties are unrepresented and do not have that support and advice, and it show. Mediators can only do so much, they cannot fill that gap.
