I agree - flight delays, crime, life changing accidents, they are all just a fact of life. It's similar to when people whinge about being knocked down by cars of when their houses get burgled. We, as the public, should not be liable to pay increased taxes and insurance to pay for the prisons and compensation. Sh*t happens, live with it.

I sometimes find myself questioning the need for a justice system at all.

Corporations, such as airlines, should be able to act with complete impunity and no accountability to the consumer. They could save even more money, and thus reduce the price of tickets, by only employing 1 pilot for every 3 flights. It's pot-luck if the pilot turns up to your flight but at least you won't be paying the increased price of flight tickets you'd have to pay if there was some sort of financial sanction to the airline for breaching the agreement.
