The point remains valid and raises interesting questions - does the duty of a lawyer to client include advising on ethical implications and in particular the effect of legislation such as the UN Guiding Principles and the Modern Slavery Act? Clearly it does. What if the client seeks advice on pursuing a course of action which is unethical but not yet illegal? What if the action is illegal in country X but not country Y but country X has extra territorial reach? We cannot ignore these issues - as Paul Beckett says they will not go away; today's ethics are tomorrow's laws.
